Who am I?

Installers have general knowledge of some of the HVACR related trades. Usually installs heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment in residential, industrial, institutional and commercial applications.

Essential Skills

Essential Skills are not the technical skills required by particular occupations but rather the skills applied in all occupations. These skills provide the foundation for learning all other skills and apply to careers in HVACR. See Employment and Social Development Canada for more details.

The most important Essential Skills for Installers (as determined by industry consultation) are:

  • Numeracy - Ability to use measuring devices as required for planning of installation
  • Thinking Skills – Often required to work under  pressure to solve problems in installation
  • Document Use - Correct interpretation of codes, manuals, assembly and wiring documents in the installation and set-up of equipment is required.

What do I do?

As an Installer you may do some of the following:

  • Install heating, ventilation or air conditioning equipment observing safety at all times
  • Correctly interpret assembly and wiring diagrams in installation of equipment
  • Understand and follow system and equipment installation and operating manuals in set-up of equipment
  • Ensure that work conforms to codes for municipality and utilities
  • Communicate with customers on correct care, operation and control of their new equipment and identify other preventive work while on site
  • Complete installation records and paper work accurately and on time
  • Maintain truck and ensure that appropriate tools and parts are stocked.

Education/Training

  • Must already be an apprentice or has completed the apprenticeship training and is a Journeyperson
  • Usually is a licensed Refrigeration Mechanic, Mechanical Technician, Gas Fitter or equivalent
  • Must have knowledge of gas code, safety requirements
  • Must have a drivers license and be insurable
  • Usually is required to have had experience as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic.
